 Natural Sleep Aids

At times I have had trouble sleeping and getting a

regular good nights sleep has led me on quite a

journey.  I wanted to avoid pharmaceutucals and

find natural sleep aids that work.

Over the last few months I have  begun to study and

review many books, DVD’S and even E-Books on

chronic insomnia and other sleep disorders

   like snoring and sleep apnea.

There are a lot of different types of sleep disorders

but the good news is that there are a lot of natural sleep aids available too.

One E-Book I found helpful was The Insomnia Guide,

whilst  this is book isn’t perfect I did find it helpful and learned some great tips to help me sleep better.

Sleep Disorders

According to the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research of the National Institutes of Health, 70 million American adults suffer from some kind of sleep disorder . We know from research that one of the effects of insomnia is extreme fatigue and this is responsible for work and traffic accidents, mood swings and even an increased chance of obesity. The cost and disruption to people’s lives is high and the cost to society is estimated to be in billions of dollars.

This article discusses several solutions one might evaluate when considering how to improve your sleeping patterns.

Most adults of us do best with about 8 hours of sleep each night until about the age of 60, after which 6 hours may be enough. Even though the elderly need less sleep, almost 50% of people over the age of 60 experience some degree of insomnia. The best measure of the amount of sleep needed is how you feel. If you awaken feeling refreshed, you are getting enough sleep. For some people, this may take only 4 hours.Others can need up to 10 hours to feel rested.

Now many of us have experienced trouble sleeping and fortunately this is a short term or infrequent occurrence for most. However if you find yourself spending a lot of time awake at night (three or more times a week over a period of a month or more) or if you regularly find yourself nodding off during the day you may be suffering from chronic insomnia and need to talk to your heath professional.

In many cases sleep problems are caused by poor night-time habits like taking caffeine, not having a regular routine or getting over stimulated just prior to bedtime. Working on these can help you fall alseep sooner. Sometimes sleep disorders are caused by disruption in circadian rhythm patterns. If that is the case then a blue light sleep aid can be helpful. Melatonin supplements can also be very helpful where sleep patterns have been disrupted and melatonin side effects are usually absent or minimal in most people. Stress is another primary cause of sleeplessness as is disturbance to natural sleep patterns through shift work or travel.

Most people don’t need medication . Your health care provider can talk to you about using prescribed medications if everything else has failed. For those of us who would at least like to explore other options there are an increasing range of natural sleep aids and other behavioural remedies that can be extremely helpful. In many cases it is about trying to find the range of approaches that works best for you.
