 Natural Sleep Aids

I stopped the sleeping pills since the side effects are worse than missing sleep. Now taking ativan and xanax occassionaly, but these are very addictive. Tried Melatonin, Sleepytime Tea, Valerium, Benedryl, Tylenol PM…nothing works!! Any suggestions?

My suggestion would be to go back on sleeping pills and find one that the side effects are more tolerable. Taking Xanax or Ativan to help with sleep is very, very addicting, much worse than any of the sleeping pills. And is that why you are taking them? Or do you have actuall panic attacks that you are taking them for? Use them only for the worst panic attacks. There are no natural remedies that will work as you have already found out for yourself and I too. As I also suffer from chronic insomnia. You can try relaxing your mind each evening before bedtime. Take a warm bath with candle light only, and maybe soft music in the background, close your eyes and focus on relaxing each muscle in your body from head to toe. Then get into bed with a very boring book. And have a background noise like a fan running. That is the best of my own remedies. But it all comes down to the fact that pills are needed to give you a good nights sleep.Good luck!

Here are the non-medicinal aids I can offer:
Avoid anything with caffeine in it for 6 hours before you get in bed. This includes soda and chocolate.
Keep the room slightly warm, it will help you sleep easier.
You can try a glass of warm milk before you sleep, it might help (but never helped me).
Do more physical exercise during the day. You’ll be really tired at night.
Take a nice warm bath to relax you before you get into bed, it might help.
The main problem with being unable to sleep is racing or jumping thoughts. Focus on a very pleasant relaxing place in your mind and visualize yourself there and try to hold it as long as possible.
It is important to clear out all of the things in your mind. Some people are preoccupied thinking of their day or tomorrow.
If you are, write your thoughts down for a couple minutes to get them out.
I do not know of any herbal remedies aside from Camomile tea. However, most herbal products are not FDA tested and can do serious harm to your body.
I was a chronic insomnia sufferer since early middle school. I’ve been clinically diagnosed by 2 psychiatrists.
I had built up such a resistance to sleep aids that I just didn’t respond unless I took twice the normal dose.
I finally got medication to fix the underlying cause of my insomnia: racing and jumping thoughts.
The best thing to do is find a therapist or psychologist, sooner rather than later, so you can get the proper medication to cure the cause of your insomnia.

Write down everything you have to do the next day before bed.
Get a heating pad and slip it under your back on low or medium covered with something really really soft. This makes the body thing its comfy and womby…
Meditation is always a good thing. Clear your thoughts… breathe in and out.. you dont have to be sitting weird.
Stay away from the ativan and xanax… they are soul killers.
A nice shower can do wonders and sleeping on clean bedding.
Oh yeah… i used to sleep naked and couldnt sleep unless I was naked… then after a bout of insomnia I tried wearing loose silky clothes…
    Worked.
    Maybe its nakey time?

One needs to be very cautious when it comes to insomnia. If you take too much over the counter pills, your insomnia can be habit forming and will get worse as result. Prescription meds are a no no, they cause your nervous system to become weak, and the condition will only worsen as well, which can cause your acute insomnia become chronic.
Most of the time, I always tell people who complain about not being able to sleep for a night or two, that they need to stake it out, read, watch a movie, when your body is tired, it will go to sleep. Check your diet, of course if you take certain excitement inducing substance, caffeine tea, or coffee, you will develop insomnia as well. But those are only temporary.
If you do need something to assist you to sleep, there are non harmful herbal remedies. Valerian root works well, taking in pill form, but it has a very strong smell. So far the best cure I have discovered is a sublingual form melatonin, a natural remedy. You can find this sublingual melatonin on http://www.emersonecologics.com, put one dropper full of this cherry tasting remedy under your tongue, you are going to sleep in 15 min. One drop is enough for a fully grown adult. For young teens, half a dropper is quite enough, this beat out Valerian root by a lot.
It is natural for the body to need sleep, and it is unnatural to have insomnia, your body needs the sleep to repair its overall defense mechanism. Melatonin helps your brain regain its natural sleep pattern with no harm. Sleep, so you can wake up with energy and productivity.

my advice….i also have sleeping issues…i like to use relaxing shower products like dove calming night shower gel i also have some lavender linen and room spray i spray on my pillow, i find that snuggling up with a word puzzle and a cup of hot chocolate works well and if you’re a smoker a Little bit of cannabis might might u relaxed enough to fall right to sleep but moderation is key.

Some warm milk at bedtime is supposed to help. There are lots of other remedies that you can find in a web search for “natural sleep remedies”.
